Hummingbird Disability Network Launch
Research Assistant Steph Evans participated in the Hummingbird Disability Network launch event held from March 17-19 in Montreal with DisAbled Women’s Network Canada (DAWN). The network is committed to empowering women and girls, trans, two-spirit, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals with disabilities across Canada by supporting their leadership and advocacy skills, building community engagement, and providing a strong peer support network. The primary aim of the network is to create an inclusive environment where everyone is valued and their abilities acknowledged and realized. During the event, Steph attended various panels and activities, including Empowered Perspectives: Black Women+ Leading Intersectional Change, Rooting Resilience: Addressing GBV through Peer Support, and Our Human Rights and International Work. Steph is grateful to be part of the Hummingbird network and contribute to the cause of creating positive change for people with disabilities.
ViaYouth Summit
Steph attended the annual ViaYouth Summit from March 15 to 17 in Halifax Nova Scotia with Motivate Canada. The summit brought together young leaders who aimed to inspire positive change, share stories, and connect with like-minded individuals. Steph also had the opportunity to experience Indigenous culture by participating in a smudging ceremony and trying powwow dancing. The summit featured a range of sessions and workshops, including “Cultivating Authentic Relationships” led by Corey Robinson, which focused on creating safe spaces where people can express themselves without fear of judgement. Another session, “Diversity & Inclusion – Fostering a Harmonious Society,” emphasized embracing diversity and acknowledging everyone’s unique stories. Additionally, DeRico Symonds facilitated a workshop on “The Power of Personal Narratives – Connecting Communities,” which highlighted the significance of sharing personal experiences to bring communities together. The summit’s keynote speaker was Lindsay Ruck, an author and creator from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
