To celebrate National Accessibility Week, the CARES Lab and the Blundon Centre (Accessibility Services, Memorial University) co-hosted an Open Mic Night at Memorial University. The event brought together students, staff, faculty, and community members for an evening of connection, creativity, and reflection.
The room was set up to feel relaxed and welcoming, with round tables arranged around a small opening for performances. Guests were greeted with light snacks and mocktails, each one creatively named after themes of equity, access, and inclusion. The evening was emceed by Jordan Hollohan (Dept. of Archeology), who kept the energy warm and welcoming throughout the night.

Throughout the evening, performers shared music, poetry, short films, and personal reflections about disability, identity, and empowerment. The open mic created a space for participants to express their stories and experiences in their own words and on their own terms.
This was more than an open mic. It was a space to listen, witness, and reflect. The stories and performances reminded us that accessibility is not only something to celebrate, but something to fight for. It is about creating meaningful access to education, community, and self-expression.
We’re grateful to all who participated and helped us honour the week with both joy and justice in mind.
