In an effort to promote inclusivity and equity in social work practice, a national webinar co-hosted by the CASW (Canadian Association of Social Workers) and the NLCSW (Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers) titled “Adopting Anti-Ableist Approaches in Social Work Practice with Families: Inclusive Strategies for Supporting and Responding to the Needs of Disabled Parents” is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 2024. The 90-minute session, set to commence at 1:00 PM (Island time) and 12:30 PM (Labrador time), aims to equip social workers with the necessary knowledge and tools to support parents with disabilities across various sectors.
Led by presenters Dr. Ami Goulden, PhD, RSW, and Dr. Laura Pacheco, PhD, both Assistant Professors in the School of Social Work at Memorial University, the webinar promises to introduce the principles of disability justice and explore strategies for creating inclusive and empowering environments for parents with disabilities.
Joining Dr. Goulden is Dr. Laura Pacheco, whose research and practice areas include reproductive justice, mothering with a disability, and the intersection of parenting with intellectual disabilities and the child welfare system. With over a decade of experience in community engagement and research, Dr. Pacheco brings a unique perspective to the webinar, drawing from her lived experience with disability.
The webinar will address the unique challenges faced by parents with disabilities and provide participants with best practices for delivering culturally competent and inclusive care. Whether attendees are seasoned social workers or new to the profession, the session offers valuable resources and perspectives to enhance their practice and promote inclusive and equitable services for all families.
Through this webinar, organizers aspire to contribute to the creation of a more just and inclusive society for parents across Canada, fostering environments where every family can thrive regardless of ability.
