We are excited to share that research from the CARES Lab is featured in the April exhibit of Picture Us: A Research at Memorial Event, a new Centennial initiative celebrating the diversity of research happening across the university. Our featured photo, Unfiltered Truths (2025), spotlights our study on gender-based violence experienced by disabled women in Newfoundland and Labrador. Drawing on participants’ powerful narratives, the image and accompanying text give voice to stories that are too often silenced. One participant shared, “It’s like he just thrived on it and every situation got worse and worse.” These unfiltered accounts reveal how ableism, inaccessibility, and systemic failures intersect to deepen harm. The work calls for disability-informed policy and support to ensure no survivor is ignored or dismissed. The photo is on display beginning April 16 at the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation.
We are also proud to celebrate CARES Lab research assistant Israt Jahan Lipa, whose photograph Symbol of Motion Frozen in Stillness (2023) was featured in March’s inaugural gallery. Taken in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the photo captures the materiality of an accident memorial from her research project, Evil Scars on Roads: Folk Beliefs and Narratives about Road Crashes and Material Culture of Roadside Shrines in Bangladesh. Israt is a PhD candidate in the Department of Folklore.
Picture Us is a Centennial initiative showcasing Memorial University’s diverse research activities through a series of monthly photographic exhibits. Running from March 2025 to April 2026, the series features up to 100 researchers across disciplines.
