The CARES Lab has launched a national study to explore how disabled students and students with disabilities experience academic and field education accommodations in social work programs across Canada. The Accommodations in Canadian Social Work Education study investigates the barriers, supports, and systemic dynamics that shape disabled students’ access to equitable education in both classroom and practicum settings.
We hope to identify gaps in institutional responsiveness and highlight promising practices that foster inclusion. The study focuses on the roles of accessibility services, faculty, and field education staff in supporting students who request accommodations.
The research team is currently recruiting participants who:
- Are enrolled in or have graduated (within the past two years) from a BSW, MSW, or PhD program in social work in Canada; and
- Identify as disabled or as someone with a disability, impairment, or health condition that affects their academic participation.
Participation involves completing an online survey. The survey includes multiple-choice and open-ended questions, with the goal of gathering a national picture of accommodation processes and lived experiences.
