
The CARES Lab is excited to share that several members of our team will be participating in the upcoming Accessibility Awareness Panel: Access = (dis)Ability Inclusion on Thursday, November 27th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. NST via Microsoft Teams.
This event brings together leaders in disability rights, social work education, and disability justice to reflect on decades of advocacy, teaching, and community engagement. Hosted by the the Faculty of Health School of Social Work at Dalhousie University, the panel will explore how access, belonging, and disability-affirming practice continue to shape social work and related fields.
Panel Presentations:
Journey to Inclusion: Decades of Reflection on Social Work & Disability
Dr. Roy Hanes (he/him) – Over 40 years of experience in disability rights activism, policy, and inclusion at community, national, and international levels.
Dr. Irene Carter (she/her) – Foundational contributor to Disability Studies at the University of Windsor and long-time advocate for disability inclusion in social work curriculum and practice.
Dr. Judy MacDonald (she/her) – Researcher and advocate whose work has shaped accessibility and accommodation policies at Dalhousie University and across the social work profession.
Creating Spaces of Belonging: What Disability-Affirming Education and Practice Can Teach Us
Dr. Ami Goulden (she/her) – Assistant Professor at Memorial University and Director of the CARES Lab. Her research focuses on disability justice, access, and community-driven approaches to inclusion in social work.
Cultivating Hope: A Social Work Perspective on Disability, Mental Health, and the Climate Crisis
Sarah Norris (she/her) – PhD candidate in Health (Dalhousie), recipient of both a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship and a Dalhousie President’s Award, and CARES Lab member. Sarah’s research highlights disabled leadership in climate adaptation and resilience work.
Rose Singh (she/they) – PhD candidate in Social Work at Memorial University, sessional lecturer at Dalhousie, and CARES Lab member. With over two decades of social services experience, Rose’s practice, teaching, and research centre critical social work, social justice, disability justice, and community-based, anti-oppressive approaches.
